Born in Boston, MA and raised in Florida, Karen's love of cooking started at an early as she watched her mother Bernice prepare the family meals. Each week Karen would plan and prepare the grocery shopping list. On Saturday mornings she looked forward to shopping with her mother. As soon as Karen obtained a drivers license she was then able to do the family grocery shopping along. How exciting this was for Karen.
Throughout middle school and high school Karen was in the home economics cooking classes. By her senior year in high school she had obtain all credits needed to graduate so instead of going home early from school she become the home economics cooking class assistant. During her freshman year in high school her Home Economics teacher, Mrs. Winn promised Karen that she would be given the 4 year Home Economics Scholarship to attend Florida State University upon high graduation.
In 1985 Karen moved back to Boston. Karen still had that burning desire and passion to cook and eat. While living with her Aunt Ruby who was also a great cook she and Karen shared many recipes and great laughs in the kitchen.
In the early 90's she owned Cakes by Karen. Baking brought her so much joy. When asked why, she would say "it is relaxing and fun." This was only a part time business but her schedule was full weekly baking the old time favorites like Carrot Pineapple Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, Red Velvet Cake, German Chocolate Cake, Sour Cream Pound Cake, Apple Pie and more. She did everything from scratch then and still does today.
Karen stopped baking for a few years but never gave up her dream of once again owning her own food business. If you ever see Karen she will talk for hours if you let her about food.
One day Karen received a call from her friend Chiquita that Boston University was offering a certificate program to become a Private/Personal Chef. They both signed up for the program. Shortly after completion Karen’s Creative Cuisines was born. She also joined the Personal Chefs Network. She was in heaven now because she had joined a wonderful group who loves cooking and good foods just as much if not more than she does. Five years later Karen is still a member of the Personal Chefs Network and loving every minute of it.
Karen is a volunteer for Horizon for Homeless Children where she spends 2 hours per week interacting with children from the ages of 1-4. Next too cooking this has brought Karen much joy also.
